Cash-flow pressures marketing and advertising agencies often face

Agencies pay media, freelancers and staff before clients pay, and retainers can be delayed.

A single large client can account for much of revenue.

Growth needs hiring before new contracts pay.

What owners use financing for

  • Pay media spend and freelancers on behalf of clients
  • Hire ahead of new contracts
  • Cover software and overhead
  • Bridge late client payments

What lenders usually look at

  • Client concentration and retainer base
  • Deposit history
  • Aged receivables

Each lender sets its own requirements. Typical working capital programs also look for at least 6 months in business, regular deposits into a Canadian business bank account and roughly $10,000 or more in monthly revenue.

A hypothetical example

A hypothetical agency fronts $40,000 of media for a client that pays in 60 days. The owner reviews short-term options to avoid delaying payroll.

This is a hypothetical illustration, not a client story or a promise of results. Approval, amounts, terms and timing are decided by each lender and depend on your own numbers.

We show you total repayment in dollars. Short-term working capital is usually faster and easier to qualify for than a bank loan, and usually costs more. You compare the options before you decide, and nothing goes ahead without your approval.

    What Xito does

Xito is not a lender. We introduce businesses to independent lenders and funding providers.

We review your numbers, explain your options and introduce you to lenders whose programs fit. The lender, not Xito, makes the credit decision and sets the terms.

    Who you will deal with

Xito Capital Partners is a Calgary-based advisory firm led by Andrew Apedoe, with a background in valuation and investment banking. Many clients come to us before a sale, a refinancing or a lender review.

How lenders read a marketing agency’s financials

Agency revenue can look larger than it is. When you buy media on a client’s behalf and bill it back, that pass-through money shows up as revenue even though your margin on it is small. Lenders often focus on the fees you keep, so it helps to show gross billings and net agency revenue side by side.

    Retainers, projects and pass-through

A base of monthly retainers is usually easier to explain than one-off project work, because the income repeats. Lenders will want to see the contract terms: how long each retainer runs, how much notice a client has to give, and whether you invoice in advance or after the work is done. Project and campaign income is not a problem, but expect questions about how much of next quarter is already booked.

    Client concentration

If one client accounts for a large share of your revenue, a lender is really assessing that client’s ability to keep paying you. Be ready to show the top five clients by revenue, how long each has been with you and how they pay.

    Payroll, freelancers and seasonality

Agencies are people-heavy, so payroll and freelancer costs are the biggest cash call each month. Lenders commonly check that payroll remittances to the CRA are current. If your work is seasonal, for example holiday campaigns or event-driven work, explain the pattern so a slow month is not read as a decline.

Financing options agencies commonly look at

Which option fits depends on your history, your clients and how quickly you need funds. Each lender sets its own requirements and makes its own credit decision.

What to have ready before a review

Xito is not a lender. We explain which options may fit, show the total cost of each and introduce you to independent lenders.

Common questions from marketing and advertising agencies

    Do lenders like agency retainers?

Recurring retainers can help the picture, though each lender decides.

    Does Xito lend money?

No. Xito is not a lender. We review your situation and introduce you to independent lenders and funding providers. The lender makes the credit decision and sets the terms.

    What will financing cost?

It varies by lender, amount and term. Short-term working capital is usually more expensive than a bank loan, so we show you the total repayment in dollars for each option before you decide.

    How long does it take?

Timing depends on the lender, how quickly you send a complete file and approval. Smaller requests can move faster than larger ones. Timing is never guaranteed.

What do I need to apply?

Lenders commonly ask for recent business bank statements, owner identification and a void cheque. Larger requests may need financial statements, receivables aging and CRA balances. Each lender sets its own requirements.
